What Restaurant Employees Really Want

If you’ve ever caught yourself saying employees just don’t want to work anymore, I want to challenge you in a good way. Because what restaurant employees really want isn’t what most restaurant owners think. After coaching independent restaurants for more than 20 years, I can tell you with confidence that most restaurant owners are asking the wrong question.

It’s not, “Why don’t they want to work?”

It’s, “What are we giving them to work with?”

It’s not just about money for restaurant employees

Most restaurant owners think employees want more money, more perks, fewer rules. And sure, those things matter.

But great employees want something deeper.

They want clarity consistency and leadership.

They want to know what’s expected of them. They want to know how to win at their job. They want to know who’s in charge. And they want to know the rules apply to everyone not just some people on some days.

Chaos is exhausting. Inconsistency is frustrating. Weak leadership creates turnover faster than low pay ever will.

Systems are for you and your restaurant employees

This is where so many restaurant owners miss the connection. Systems aren’t just for you. They’re for your team.

When you have systems, training becomes clear. Expectations are defined. Accountability is fair. Employees don’t have to guess what you want. They don’t have to read your mood. They don’t have to wonder if today is going to be one of those days.

That kind of stability is powerful.

That’s how you become an employer of choice. Not by being soft but by being solid.

Your restaurant team doesn’t need a buddy

Your employees don’t need a boss who tries to be everyone’s buddy. They need a leader who communicates clearly, follows through and creates a workplace they can count on.

When leadership is strong, good employees stay.

When leadership is weak, even great pay won’t save you.

Start with yourself

If you want better employees, stop asking, “What’s wrong with them?”

Start asking:

  • How clear am I?
  • How consistent are my systems?
  • How strong is my leadership?

Fix those and you’ll be shocked at how much your team steps up.
