Learn Effective Restaurant Marketing Tactics from a True Restaurant Pro

Restaurant owners often turn to marketing as the solution to their biggest challenges, not realizing that a lot of times their marketing is creating more challenges. Since my expertise is on restaurant operations and coaching restaurant owners how to become the leaders their restaurants need, I like to talk to other restaurant marketing experts to pick their brains and find new ideas such as Josh Kopel, my guest for this episode of The Restaurant Prosperity Formula podcast, a restaurateur, tech pioneer and restaurant marketing coach.

Josh is a real restaurant pro and during this conversation teaches you how to use the three levers that move your restaurant forward and revolve around a profitable revenue model, your ability to gain attention and turning on customer frequency when you need it most.

Throughout his 20-year career, he’s managed venues ranging from casual dining concepts to Hollywood nightclubs, bars and ultra-lounges. He also opened his own Michelin-rated fine dining concept. At one point he operated three of the most successful concepts in every tier of dining in one of the most competitive markets in the country.

He credits his success to marketing is and a commitment to becoming the best marketer he could be. Not only did it provide him a great platform for great restaurants, but it also enabled him to begin his evolution into media and teaching.

One example of success he credits to marketing? There was a point when his restaurants weren’t making enough money and weren’t profitable, so he committed to doing 1,000 things until he figured out the things that would move his business forward and help them scale up. He did the 1,000 things over the course of 18 months and in that time, he took a 3-year-old restaurant from $1.4 to $3.6 million.

During our conversation, Josh and I talk about the importance of having a growth mindset, looking for help anywhere and everywhere and then using the knowledge to overcome fear and challenges. As Josh says, the genius is in the doing. As I like to say, those who take action see results.

Everything Josh and I talk about in this episode is simple. That doesn't mean it's easy, but it is incredibly simple to accomplish. You just have to do it.

Josh also shares his three keys to scaling a restaurant business. The three levers that move your business forward:

  • A profitable revenue model
  • Your ability to get attention because that's what drives new business
  • Driving your customers to your business when you need them most
